Somatic Therapy in Orem, Utah

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented therapeutic model designed to heal trauma and chronic stress by working directly with the nervous system. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE is a "bottom-up" approach rooted in the ground-breaking premise that trauma is not only a psychological event but also a biological response trapped in the body. Levine's work was inspired by observing animals in the wild. He noted that while wild animals face constant life-threatening danger, they rarely suffer from PTSD because they instinctively "shake off" and discharge the massive survival energy generated during fight, flight, or freeze states. In contrast, humans often use cognitive or social conditioning to suppress these natural completions, leaving our nervous systems stuck in an ongoing state of threat or collapse.

In session, Somatic Experiencing does not require you to repeatedly retell or relive your painful story. Instead, a practitioner helps you safely track your moment-to-moment internal bodily sensations, gut instincts, and physical postures. Utilizing Dr. Levine's core techniques of titration (touching upon tiny, manageable pieces of distress at a time) and pendulation (looping back and forth between states of activation and states of safe, calm resourcing), you are guided to stay within your window of tolerance. This gentle, rhythmic movement gives your nervous system the space it needs to finish incomplete defensive actions—such as a small somatic twitch, a trembling release, or a deep sigh—safely discharging the survival energy that has been bound up for years.

By remapping the body's deeply held survival memories, Somatic Experiencing provides profound, lasting physiological relief. Major clinical benefits include a significant reduction in post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSD), fewer panic or anxiety flare-ups, and relief from chronic muscle tension or body pain tied to emotional distress. Because it rebuilds your capacity to self-regulate, SE helps you move away from overwhelming loops of hypervigilance or flat emotional numbness.
